Rasputin’s early life is quite a mystery. He claimed to come from a religious peasant Siberian family in 1869, but there’s evidence suggesting he might have belonged to a group called the Khlysty. They were known for intense religious practices, like hurting themselves and being very promiscuous.
In the 1890s, Rasputin had a profound religious experience that left a lasting impact on him. Inspired by monks, he embarked on a journey across the country and eventually arrived in St. Petersburg in the year 1905. As more and more people became aware of his healing abilities, he gradually gained popularity and the trust of Russia’s elite.
Rasputin claimed to have abilities that included communicating with God, having visions, and performing miracles. He had a charismatic personality and was known for his unusual behaviour. Rasputin was a drinker and had quite an appetite for women.
His ability to heal the sick is one of the most debated aspects of his legacy. While he had a devoted following in his community, there were also skeptics who believed he was a fraud.
Rasputin’s Influence on the Russian Royal Family
Rasputin had a huge impact on the Russian royal family. He shared a very close relationship with Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna (1872–1918), the wife of Tsar Nicholas II, the last Emperor of Russia. Rasputin also maintained a close relationship with the Tsar, who was often seen as a weak and indecisive ruler, out of touch with the needs of his people, which ultimately contributed to the 1917 Russian Revolution.
The Tsarina and Tsar had five children: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexei. Young Alexei suffered from hemophilia, a condition causing severe and dangerous bleeding episodes.
Rasputin played a crucial role in the life of Tsarevich Alexei. Without Rasputin’s assistance, the young prince’s life might have been even shorter. Their connection began when Alexei was just one year old in 1905. Rasputin was urgently summoned to the palace to aid with a severe bleeding episode. His presence and calming influence facilitated the boy’s recovery, earning the trust of the Tsar and Tsarina.
After this first incident Rasputin made the prophecy that if he died or the royal family tested him, their son would be gone and the monarchy over. From this moment on he became indispensable to the royal couple.
Rasputin’s Unusual Ways
Rasputin had some strange habits. He looked wild and often indulged in drinking and a wild lifestyle. Some thought he used mysterious powers to gain control over others, while some believed he truly had a unique link to the spirit world.
Rasputin had mixed and sometimes confusing beliefs. He was a strong Christian, yet he also had faith in magic and superstitions. He could heal people, but he lived a wild life with many women.
Rasputin was married, but he did not believe in the traditional Christian ideal of marriage.

He married Praskovya Dubrovina, a peasant girl from his village. They had seven children together, but only three survived to adulthood and Praskovya remained loyal to her husband throughout his life.

Numerous conspiracy theories surround Rasputin, with some suggesting he was a German spy, a member of a secret society, or even a warlock.

Over time, Rasputin accumulated many enemies. In 1916, Prince Felix Yusupov and other nobles conspired against him. They attempted to poison him with cyanide-laced cakes and drinks, but despite consuming a significant amount, Rasputin miraculously survived. Failing their first attempt, his enemies launched a more traditional approach, trying to shoot him, but once again, Rasputin stayed alive. It was only in their final attempt that they succeeded in killing Rasputin by throwing him into an ice-cold river.
Rasputin was assassinated in Saint Petersburg, Russia on December 30, 1916, at the age of 47.
Rasputin’s assassination was a major event in Russian history. It helped to precipitate the Russian Revolution of 1917, which led to the overthrowing of the Romanov dynasty and the establishment of the Soviet Union.
There is still a lot unclear when it comes to Rasputin’s death. Some people believe that he was actually killed by a group of British agents who were trying to destabilize the Russian government, while others believe that he was killed by the Tsar himself, who was afraid of Rasputin’s growing power.
