In recent years, partly due to social media, an increasing number of conspiracy theories about the Earth have become popular. The Hollow Earth Theory is one such theory. It has been around for centuries and was a topic that science fiction writers, like Jules Verne in his book ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth,’ have loved. But how likely is it to be true?
Recent discoveries claim to support the Hollow Earth Theory.
One hint of a hollow Earth could be that we have some unexplained anomalies in gravity and the magnetic fields of our planet. But these anomalies could be a result of the presence of dense underground minerals. Proponents of the Hollow Earth theory claim that mysterious unexplained lights and sounds are evidence of activity inside the Earth. When it comes to mysterious lights it is most likely the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights. This is a natural light display in the sky that is caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with the Earth’s atmosphere. The aurora borealis is most commonly seen in high-latitude regions, such as the Arctic and Antarctic. So we have an explanation of these lights, but what about the sounds?
People are still searching for more evidence, and on conspiracy-focused TikTok, you can find numerous unexplainable videos. However, distinguishing between video editing and reality is challenging. We lack concrete proof of the existence of entrances to the Hollow Earth. Strangely, many UFO sightings have involved craft disappearing into the Earth, but these videos remain unconfirmed by authorities or researchers.
Jules Verne knew about the Hollow Earth theory, but he was a writer of fiction, not a scientist. His novel ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ is a work of science fiction, and the Hollow Earth theory is a key element of this very interesting plot.
Who would be living in the Hollow Earth?
Several rumours exist when it comes to this conspiracy theory. Some suggest that many different civilizations or species live in the Hollow Earth. Some claim it’s the Greys (an alien species), while others propose that the forgotten ancient population of Atlantis found their home there. Yet another group believes in the existence of the Agartha civilization, said to be technologically advanced and hidden from the outside world for thousands of years.
The Agartha Civilization
The Agartha civilization is a legendary kingdom with its origins in ancient India. It is mentioned in texts like the Bhagavata Purana and other Hindu writings. In these texts, Agartha is described as a beautiful and abundant subterranean realm inhabited by wise and kind beings.
The belief in Agartha was later embraced by Tibetan Buddhism, where it became linked with the idea of Shambhala, a mythical realm of enlightenment.
Shambhala is said to be hidden from the regular world and will only be revealed when humanity is ready to receive its wisdom.
In the West, the concept of Agartha became popular in the 19th century, thanks to Jules Verne and Edgar Rice Burroughs. These writers used Agartha as a setting for their fantastical stories, which helped to popularize the myth.
Today, the belief in Agartha is still alive and well, particularly among New Age and esoteric circles. Some people believe that Agartha is a real physical place, while others believe that it is a spiritual or symbolic place.
Nazis’ New Home — The Hollow Earth
Of course, Hitler and the Nazis also play a part in this conspiracy theory. It has been rumoured that the Nazis were searching for a secret entrance in Antarctica and found one during World War II. According to the rumour, they tried to reach an agreement with those who were already living inside and established a secret Nazi colony within the Earth.
Does the Government have any Knowledge?
Officially, obviously not. The government does not approve any of these conspiracy theories, but some conspiracy theorists claim to know that the government is only covering up what is really going on. If this is indeed true, the motivation remains unclear. Is it because the government seeks to shield us from a certain threat or aims to conceal advanced technology, extraterrestrial beings, or other species from our awareness?
Scientists have only been able to scratch the surface when it comes to Earth’s crust.
Oceanic crust averages about 5–10 kilometers thick, continental crust is thicker, averaging about 30–50 kilometers thick. In some places, such as the Tibetan Plateau, the continental crust can be up to 80 kilometers thick.
The Kola Superdeep Borehole is the deepest hole ever drilled into the Earth’s crust.
It is located on the Kola Peninsula in Russia and is 12,262 meters (40,230 feet) deep. This is about 8 miles below the Earth’s surface.

The project was abandoned in1989 due to technical difficulties, but the borehole remains the deepest in the world.
In 1989, the collapse of the Soviet Union occurred (until 1992). This might have been one of the reasons this project ended, but it is still unclear why it was never continued later.
Scientific data, like seismic information, suggests that the Earth has a solid iron core, surrounded by a liquid outer core and a solid inner core and this structure doesn’t align with the Hollow Earth theory.
The most probable location for a Hollow Earth entrance would be at the North and South Poles because the Earth’s crust is thinner there.
Conclusion
We know that we don’t know anything. Anything could be possible, and nothing has been proven. The idea of forgotten, advanced ancient civilizations living inside the Earth is intriguing, but it’s also quite unsettling. For now, all we can do is fantasize about this possibility until we have better technology to explore it ourselves.
Currently, the Hollow Earth theory remains a pseudoscientific concept without support from scientific evidence.
